Hammersmith Friends are taking part in the weekly West London Welcome refugee and migrant drop-in day centre that has been operating in our Meeting House since January 2018.
Friends are serving on the ‘welcome’ desk to greet arrivals, providing hot drinks, helping with preparing lunch, running a yoga class and working in the garden. People can take part in a range of activities, including weekly English classes.
Generally 30 or more asylum seekers come each week. Several are homeless and destitute so a hot meal means a lot – as does sharing ordinary kindness and getting help with referrals for practical help. One icy February Thursday, with snow piled up in the streets, one homeless refugee was waiting outside at 9 a.m. when we opened.
